Via Veritas Vita

The painting Via veritas vita stems from a figurative and abstract conception of the suffering and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, understood as the foundation for humanity’s growth and ascent. The work is structured into two parts: the figurative and the conceptual, which represent humanity and Jesus in different sections of the composition. The figurative aspect (what is visible at first glance) shows Jesus as the most visible and evident element: his sacrifice wrought for us. The abstract, on the other hand, is expressed through the colors and brushstrokes used, a topic that will be addressed further on.

Christ’s face appears with a look of sadness and acceptance, in the moments before his crucifixion. The colors and hues not only lend a modern touch to the work but are also used as vehicles of emotion. Specifically, they aim to represent the range of human feelings involved when speaking of Christ’s sacrifice. To that end, I sought to portray all of humanity by using as many colors as possible.

The feature that sets this work apart is the upward strokes made with a palette knife. Far from being a merely aesthetic resource, these strokes create a strong contrast with the figure of Christ. While Jesus adopts a downcast and dejected posture, the strokes that surround him are ascending, symbolizing humanity and its elevation. It seems as if Christ is disintegrating, but instead of falling, his particles RISE. Because his sacrifice had that very purpose: our ascent as humanity.
